What do we believe at Unity?
1. We unite with all Evangelical churches that hold to the teachings of the
Apostle's Creed as the fundamental building blocks of our faith. We call ourselves one with them to co-exist as the catholic (universal) church.
2. More specifically we recognize the
London Baptist Confession of 1689 as a solid synopsis of all the major doctrines that we uphold.
3. Our church government is set up under
Elder rule. These Elders are common men who have been set apart to lead the church into all truth. These men are recognized as authority and are empowered by the people to govern the church body.
4. We are like minded with the
Southern Baptist Convention in seeing a strong need for sending and supporting missionaries to spread the gospel to all parts of the world.
5. We uphold to what has historically been deemed
"TULIP." This is a systematic way of recognizing the Sovereignty of God over his creation in general and over salvation in specific. We do not distinguish TULIP as being different from the gospel. TULIP and Calvinism are names associated with this interpretation and are subject to great debate over their meaning. We simply uphold the gospel, interpreting it in a like mind with what we believe TULIP and Calvinism are trying to say.
- Total Depravity - That sin has devastated all parts of man --- the heart, emotions, will, mind, and body --- from birth, so that he is completely unable to reach out to a Holy God in and of himself. See Mark 7:21-23; Romans 3:10-12; Ephesians 2:15; Psalm 51:5
- Unconditional Election - God does not base his choosing on any merit of the individual, but rather chooses whom He will save according to the kind intention of His will. This is different than "foreknowledge," which states that God can see in the future who will choose him. Unconditional Election means that some are chosen into salvation while others are not. See Ephesians 1:4-8; Romans 9:15-21
- Limited Atonement - Though Jesus's sacrifice was sufficient for all, He only died for His own, the elect. Jesus's death was not wasted on those who would never call Him Lord. See Matthew 26:28; Matthew 25:32-33; Ephesians 5:25-27
- Irresistible Grace - When God calls out His elect to salvation, they will ultimately be saved. God allows all people to hear the gospel but effectually calls His elect. The effectual call is inaugurated by the Holy Spirit and is acted upon by faith, which is also a gift. See Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 2:12-13; John 1:12-13
- Perseverance of the Saints - God does not allow His own to ever lose the justification he has given them. Those who are chosen are eternally secure. See John 10:27-28; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Romans 8:1
